Ingredients

  • cup softened butter
  • 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  • Soften the butter for 1-2 hours. It should be cool to the touch at room temperature.
  • Add the softened butter to a large mixing bowl.
  • Sift the powdered sugar into the mixing bowl.
  • Blend the butter and sugar until rough clumps begin to form.
  • Add the vanilla and milk; beaut until the frosting is smooth and of spreading consistency.

Notes

Slowly add more powdered sugar or milk as needed to reach desired consistency.
This recipe makes enough frosting to spread on 24 cupcakes.  If you wish to pipe taller frosting or frost a two layer cake, I would increase the recipe to:
½ cup butter
4 ½ cups powdered sugar
2 tsp vanilla
3 tbsp milk
