Pan Fried Honey Buns go from a pre-packaged snack to a decadent semi-homemade dessert that tastes like the best glazed doughnut you’ve ever had. Top them with vanilla ice cream for an even more irresistible treat.

Pan Fried Honey Buns

I took the same lunch almost every day in elementary school- a plain turkey sandwich (with Catalina dressing on the side for dipping) and a bag of chili cheese Fritos- the only thing that would vary was the dessert. Sometimes my Mom would make homemade chocolate chip cookies and sometimes she would toss in one of my favorite pre-packaged treats, like Nutty Bars or Honey Buns.

I had never thought to fry Honey Buns until someone suggested it to me the other day, and now I’m not sure I can ever eat this nostalgic little snack any other way again. Something about heating them in a skillet turns them into these magical little confections- just like a hot, fresh glazed doughnut!

What You Need

For pan fried Honey Buns you will need a pan (or skillet) and:

  • Honey Buns
  • Unsalted Butter
  • Vanilla Ice Cream (Optional)

How to Make

To make pan fried Honey Buns:

  1. Melt the butter in the pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Add two Honey Buns to the pan and cook on each side for 3-4 minutes.
  3. Remove from the pan and top with vanilla ice cream (optional).

There’s so many different variations you can make using a fried Honey Bun as the base- I’ve tried this with cinnamon sugar on top, smeared with peanut butter (SO GOOD), and want to try it topped with Sautéed Cinnamon Apples next.

Tips and Tricks

The trick to making these is you want the sugar in the icing to start to caramelize but don’t overcook it to the point of becoming hard or tough. It will start to look dark in some spots but it should not turn black (burn) over the entire surface- make sure to watch for when it is ready to flip.

Note: I used the regular, grocery store (multipack) Honey Bun size for this recipe.
